Station Inter-Section Golf Champs

March saw Blankney Golf Club host another zealously contested RAF Waddington Inter-Section Golf contest.

On a day which has been all too rare in 2013 so far, even the fair weather players should have been happy to see the sun out and a relatively calm wind which made for great conditions.

With 44 players out representing 7 sections from around the base most teams sent out 4 players with the top 3 rounds of handicap-adjusted Stableford scoring to count from each team.

Due to prolonged low temperatures and high winds through the year to date the Blankney staff were yet to rescue all the greens around the course with the large majority, particularly on the front 9 still playing off winter patches and the few standard greens yet to see full health. Many from the 44 were however untroubled with several teams of 3 returning to the club house with 3 figure team scores. Particular emphasis should also be made to the individual score of the day, coming from Chief Technician Steve Quirk who, despite a paltry handicap of 8, rattled up 43 points.

Half way through the day it was starting to look like an inter-Squadron competition as 8 Squadron’s multiple teams all threatened an excellent score from Air Warfare Centre. It was 8 Squadron Engineers second team, captained by Senior Aircraftman Sam Shuttleworth who returned to the club house victorious posting an impressive score of 115 points. 8 Squadron’s aircrew team were in a close second on 111 points with the Air Warfare Centre team narrowly behind them on 109 points in third.

The day was rounded off by a beer and warming plate of cottage pie in the clubhouse. Most people seemed to avoid choking when the event organiser, Sergeant Kirby, duly awarded himself the consolation prize of the day after winning the 2s!

Plaudits then go to the victorious Engineers from 8 Squadron but wider recognition must go to all 44 players for making it a particularly well supported and enjoyable event. The Station Golf Committee, headed by EMGL Captain, Sergeant Kirby, organised a seamless event which was welcomed as ever by a hospitable Blankney Golf Club, and many sections are already looking forward to attempting to topple 8 Squadron next year.
