From the Editor…

So where is 2011 going? We are nearly half way through the year and the Waddington Airshow will be soon be upon us. The first few months have passed in a blur. It has been great to see RAF Waddington contributing to Operation ELLAMY with our personnel and all of our aircraft delivering Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance in the same Theatre for the first time.

Vanessa PlumleyThere are a couple of articles in this month’s magazine that help to give you an insight into what Waddington personnel have been doing in support of Operation ELLAMY and they give you a sense of the speed at which it all happened. There are also a few more insights into how the personnel at Waddington have been spending their time when they are not busy looking after aircraft, preparing for operations and making the most of FD opportunities. RAF Waddington was lucky enough to have a visit by its Honorary Air Commodore – His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex; he went out to the Middle East and flew with our crews. He was given a ground tour of both the Nimrod and the Sentinel aircraft and he thoroughly enjoyed his flight in the Sentinel, seeing at first hand its operational contribution. On a personal note, since the last issue I have had the privilege of representing RAF Waddington and the RAF Northern Region at the RAF Swimming Championships; not to blow my own trumpet but I won gold medals in 3 events. However this would be more remarkable if I hadn’t been the only competitor!! I know that lots of people are busy and getting time off for sport is difficult but a person in their 4th decade (only just!) shouldn’t be the only competitor in some of the events in the RAF Inter-Regional Swimming Championship. Anyway I tell you this to encourage you all to get out there and participate; there are medals for everyone to be had. That said if you have been and done something, please remember to write about it in order to share it with others. There have already been comments on how good it has been to read just how far flung some of the travels have been, so please remember to send your contributions in to the Editorial Team.
