On 16 Apr 20 Cpl Chris Showell was tragically killed in a road traffic accident on the A15 on his way to work. Chris ‘Showelly’ Showell was a Chef within Catering Squadron and had been at RAF Waddington since Jan 18. Working in every mess on Station, he was a fantastic chef with a long and rewarding career ahead of him. Showelly joined the Royal Air Force in 2004 and after his basic training was posted to RAF Coningsby where he is still remembered for arriving with his parents in tow. Other tours included 3MCS, RAF Wittering and a previous stint at RAF Waddington.
A seasoned veteran of MPA, he served four times and had just returned from OP SHADER in Feb 20. Chris was due to be married on 11 Apr 20 to his beloved Annie but this wedding was postponed, like so many others, due to COVID. With his unique character, he will always be remembered for his dry sense of humour, kindness and being a true gentleman. He used to have silly rituals before working
functions within the mess like eating “The hottest chilli jam in the world”. He also tried everything to stop his eyes from streaming whilst peeling onions, two notable efforts were wearing a colander on his head whilst sucking a teaspoon and covering his whole head with cling film!
Across the broader TG19 family, he was best known for his perfectly groomed moustache, his pride and joy. His favourite saying was ‘Family and friends always come first’ and this has shown in all the kind messages, love and support his Fiancé and extended family have received. A Just Giving page was set up by Cpl Taff Williams for donations to build a memorial on Station which has now reached over £4,000. A celebration of Chris’s life is planned for next year where family, Sqn personnel, friends and colleagues will come together to remember that moustache!
Deeply missed by all that knew him, our thoughts are with Annie and Chris’s family.
