Pay As You Dine
On 1 November 2011 the Station Commander, Group Captain Jones, visited all three Messes to see PAYD in action. He manned the tills to take payment from the first customers in to lunch, at the JRM and the Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess.
Now a competent till operator following his experience at the Taster Day on 18 October 2011, the Station Commander relished the chance to be involved in the roll out of PAYD. He used the opportunity to speak to a number of customers as well as Catering personnel to learn their opinions and experiences on how the transition has been received and how it was achieved in the first place. All in all the day was a resounding success and total numbers of personnel eating in the Messes throughout the day far outweighed the expectation of Catering Squadron staffs; a very good sign for the future. ISS Defence has also commented that the rollout at Waddington has been one of the best so far of the 11 rollouts across the RAF, which is largely due to the proactive approach and partnering achieved by Catering Squadron personnel and ISS staff.
Prices have been kept low, choices are fresh and tasty and there are two attractive cafés and Raven’s café bar in which to meet up and relax over a cup of real bean coffee.
The work on Ravens Café Bar is now complete, and the area is airy and bright. The back section that was little used has also been refurbished, retaining the children’s play corner. It is the perfect place for meetings as it now features free WiFi. If you have any ideas for activities you wish to use this quieter part of the Café Bar for, do contact one of the team to discuss this, (details below).
There is a new children’s menu with mini meals such as sausage and mash, pasta or fish fingers to tempt the under-fives. The adults menu offers delicious and affordable food throughout the day and evening, and will be further developed with the future upgrading of catering equipment. This has gone a long way towards reviving Ravens as an appealing area to meet up with friends, central within the station and with plenty of parking opposite the main door.
Bookings are now being taken for wedding receptions, parties, all ranks’ functions, or even just general get togethers; it’s good to see this venue lively and busy again after its recent makeover. Moira Dean, the manager, is happy to discuss what formats of functions are available to you.
The SPAR shop has a greatly increased range of products to choose from, especially if you wish to buy quality produce to cook up a tasty meal. There are plans to increase sources of local produce, and to stock more seasonal foodstuff. There are also snacks to keep you going throughout the day; including hot sausage rolls and pasties, as well as Boston Donuts. A new, fee free cash machine has been added as part of the refurbishment.
Buzz Bees has now become the IWF Real Bean Café, featuring very reasonably priced coffee made from Fair Trade coffee beans which is proving a great success with customers. A selection of baguettes, paninis, breakfast items and cakes continue the attraction of this area as a popular meeting place within the HIVE. It is close to the playschool and a handy place to stop for a coffee and a bacon and egg bap. A children’s menu with light snacks is also available.
